The ASME A18.1 Safety Standard for Platform Lifts and Stairway Chairlifts presents certain guides for the design, construction, installation, operation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of inclined stairway chairlifts, and inclined and vertical platform lifts. It covers devices intended for transportation of a mobility-impaired person only ? typically for applications within buildings and residences.
The ultimate goal of this Standard is to help protect public safety, while reflecting best-practices of industry.
A18.1 offers essential guidance for safety to both public and private sectors:

Safety Code for Existing Elevators and Escalators

A17.3 is intended to serve as the basis for state and local jurisdictional authorities in adopting retroactive requirements for existing elevators and escalators to enhance the safety of the general public. It is also intended as a standard reference of safety requirements for the guidance of architects, engineers, insurance companies, manufacturers, and contractors, and as a standard of safety practices for building owners and managers of structures where existing elevator equipment covered in the scope of the Code is used. The purpose of this Code is to establish minimum requirements that will provide a reasonable degree of safety for the general public. While many of these requirements will also increase the degree of safety for the elevator mechanic and inspector, this area has not been specifically addressed at this time.
A17.3 guides all parties engaged in the safe installation, inspection, testing, operation, and/or insurance of existing elevators and escalators; thus sparing the major capital expense of all-new equipment. As an alternative standard to A17.1, it also allows for more flexibility in problem-solving.
Intended for anyone engaged in the safety of elevators, escalators and related conveyances.

in part for elevator codes used throughout the United
States and Canada.
The ASME A17.1/CSA B44 Code and ASME A17.7/
CSA B44.7 are only guides unless adopted as law or
regulation by an authority having jurisdiction.
Local jurisdictions may, in their adopting legislation,
occasionally revise and/or include requirements in addition
to those found in the ASME A17.1/CSA B44 and
ASME A17.7/CSA B44.7 Codes. It is therefore advisable
to check with the local jurisdiction before applying code
requirements in any area.
Requirement 1.1.2 outlines examples of equipment not
covered by theASMEA17.1/CSA B44 andASMEA17.7/
CSA B44.7 Codes. Requirement 1.1.3 specifies those
Parts and requirements of the Code that apply only to
new installations, as well as those that apply to both
new and existing installations.
