Utility LP-Gas Plant Code, 2012 Edition

National Fire Protection Association / 01-Sep-2012 / 49 pages

NFPA 59: Utility LP-Gas Plant Code applies to the design, construction, location, installation, operation and maintenance of refrigerated and non-refrigerated liquefied petroleum gas utility gas plants. Coverage of liquefied petroleum gas systems at utility gas plants extends to the point where LP-Gas or a mixture of LP-Gas and air is introduced into the utility distribution system.

The 2012 NFPA 59 includes technical changes that impact most users:

  • A new section on corrosion protection largely extracts existing requirements from the Code of Federal Regulations, 49 CFR Part 193.
  • A new section addresses training of personnel engaged in maintenance or operation of propane-air mixing equipment. .
  • A new section on construction and modification records requires operators to maintain records of the materials of construction for process equipment piping systems containing LPG and other flammable fluids, including their supporting system and foundations for plants that are built or modified after the effective date of the 2012 Edition. .
  • Requirements for separation distances for containers less than 2,000 gallons were extracted from NFPA 58: Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code. .
  • The provision for vent stacks on nonrefrigerated aboveground containers was removed. .

Standard on Selection, Care, Use, and Maintenance of Flame-Resistant Garments for Protection of Industrial Personnel Against Flash Fire, 2012 Edition

National Fire Protection Association / 2012 / 25 pages

Protect industrial workers from flash fire hazards with NFPA 2113's up-to-date provisions for PPE selection, use, and maintenance.

Developed primarily for garment end users to reduce the risks caused by incorrect maintenance, contamination, or damage, NFPA 2113 provides minimum requirements for the correct selection, care, use, and maintenance of flame-resistant garments compliant with the NFPA 2112: Standard on Flame-Resistant Garments for Protection of Industrial Personnel Against Flash Fire for use in areas at risk from flash fires.

Changes to the 2012 NFPA 2113: Standard on Selection, Care, Use, and Maintenance of Flame-Resistant Garments for Protection of Industrial Personnel Against Flash Fire include:

  • Scope and sections pertaining to the workplace hazard assessment have been modified to reflect that flame-resistant garments for industrial personnel can protect against other types of short-duration flame exposure.
  • Additional Annex text was created to describe other types and possible sources of short-duration flame exposure.
  • Definitions were updated to be consistent with the 2012 NFPA 2112 and the NFPA? Glossary of Terms.

This widely used Standard is essential for any company or facility that handles or processes flammable gas, flammable or combustible liquids, or combustible dust that may accumulate and/or deflagrate, exposing personnel to flash fire or short-duration flame exposure.

Safety Standard for Platform Lifts and Stairway Chairlifts

American Society of Mechanical Engineers / 31-Oct-2011 / 80 pages

The ASME A18.1 Safety Standard for Platform Lifts and Stairway Chairlifts presents certain guides for the design, construction, installation, operation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of inclined stairway chairlifts, and inclined and vertical platform lifts. It covers devices intended for transportation of a mobility-impaired person only ? typically for applications within buildings and residences.

The ultimate goal of this Standard is to help protect public safety, while reflecting best-practices of industry.

A18.1 offers essential guidance for safety to both public and private sectors:

  • For public sectors, it serves as the basis for state, municipal, and other jurisdictional authorities in drafting regulations governing the installation, testing, inspection, maintenance, alteration, and repair of stairway chairlifts and platform lifts.
  • For private sectors, A18.1 provides a standard reference of safety requirements for architects, engineers, insurance companies, manufacturers, and contractors, while delivering safety practices for owners and managers of structures where equipment covered in the Scope of this Standard is used.
